Francine Rodriguez has written a very compelling novel about one woman’s journey through her largely difficult life. A Woman Like Me follows Genie, a transgender woman, as she tells her troubling life story full of hardships. The story starts with a boy growing up in Thailand and ends with a woman on the run in L.A. What life choices have taken her thousands of miles from home, and what is she running from?

The book kept my interest from page to page. It was written in a style that described the characters in such realistic form that it allowed your mind to picture them in your imagination. The author
has a creative personal perspective that flows through her writing.

Gripping and as realistic as it gets. As an attorney, I found myself in the plot shadowing the characters. Indeed, the events in the book eariky reminded me of all to real events and people that have crossed my path during my 14 years of practice. Fantastic read and looking forward to the next book…

The writing keeps you on the line and in suspense throughout the protagonist’s complex and painful journey through crime, death, and family. I recommend this novel to anyone interested in the underside of justice that we never see up close, and to anyone who wants a view of society from the outside looking in.

“A Woman Like Me” takes the reader on a journey, a struggle, a discovery. It does this in much the same way as life does; gradually and almost inexorably. The reader is swept up in the protagonist’s events, struggles, victories, and developments. It’s only after a couple hundred pages, and in retrospect, that the reader appreciates just how much life our anti-heroine has lived.

I found the book an excellent read and highly recommend it. The book begins with the birth of the main character in the slums of Manila. The author vividly describes in depth the main character of the story and his journey and the cast of characters he meets in his journey to survive, using his wits, which tend to lead to violence.

The author did an excellent job of developing the main character to a point that it took a while to decide if she was male or female. The read became a real page-turner that kept you anticipating the next adventure she would throw herself in. The pace of the story did not let up at any time involving you in her desperate need to fit in. I was thoroughly engrossed with ambivalence about what is right and what is wrong in her response to situations that required instantaneous decision making. I think the author did a good job of showing her vulnerability mixed with her bravado. I thoroughly enjoyed the book and anticipate her next novel.

If you’re going to write a long fiction crime thriller, you’d better make sure of three things: you have a really great plot, gripping characters, and most important of all, the skill to create a true page-turner. Well, Francine Rodriguez certainly followed that mandate in A Woman Like Me. What a read…

Having read A WOMAN LIKE ME, I thoroughly enjoyed it. Francine had me on the waiting to find out what happened to Genie next. Francine approached the subject with sensitivity. I found that her story had a lot to say that crossed genders and sexual orientation. I believe that we have
all faced some of the problems that Genie has, wanting to be accepted, loved and not being alone. Bravo Francine! Well done!

This is a thriller unlike one that I have read before. Its unique themes that track through an entire lifetime make the reader intrigued each step of the way. From the beginning, we see how trauma and questionable childhood situations lead to a life full of equally questionable choices and considerable identity issues. What makes this novel even more gripping is that it is based on true events. It is so difficult to imagine having a life as complex and vast as the protagonist’s.
